Initial Brainstorming Ideas

  1. Limited engineering classes are very conflictive with a working student’s schedule. Things that may be possible to correct only having one course available the same time and day every semester may be to switch every semester the availability of class, make an online version of the class available, or get into contact with other local schools offering this course for dual enrollment, and see how they may be able to help with the student’s needs. This could be solved by contacting the department, contacting other schools, getting the dean involved in opening up another section and getting ahold of students who have the same issues.
  2. Better lighting on campus I think is an important one, because I know having taken night classes, that some of the regions on the outskirts of the campus where students have to park, are not lit up to the standard they should be for one to be able to see all of their surroundings. Some solutions may be to use brighter lights, have more frequent lights, more security around at night or make different parking available.
  3. My work needs a new system for carry out. At night we get extremely busy and all carry out calls are directed to the hostess who in turn has to direct them to the carry out person in the back. This becomes chaotic because she is trying to seat people and take reservations being very busy, and the calls end up coming to the bar, where I am also busy and some calls never go through. I would suggest a new answering system that would allow customers the option before they get directly through to choose, party arrangements (which we also have a separate person for that and it also initially goes through the hostess stand, but isn’t as big of a problem), carryout, banquet, general questions and reservations. It would make things a lot more organized and isn’t quite a new and modern technology that would be difficult to acquire. We would need to get into contact with the phone operating system and probably some form of a cable network to make this change happen. Also, we would have to prove to our managers that it would make work for the employees run a lot smoother.

Ashley, all three of your ideas are very well thought out and seem like plausible projects to work on! That being said, I believe option 3 is the best bet for moving forward. Not only is it the most feasible, but I believe it would offer the best variety of options that you could analyze for factors such as cost and customer satisfaction.
If you decide to go with your second option, I would be careful of the parking aspect, as parking issues were explicitly outlawed in the assignment description.

  2. Ashley, I really like all of your ideas but I think that the third idea is the most developed and would be the best one for you to do simply because you’re right in the mix of it all. Being so involved means that you’re able to do a lot of research and know all sides of the spectrum. You can explain the pros and cons to having this new answering system, and how it’ll help everything and make a better flow overall to your job. I think that it would be really beneficial for you to chose this topic. Great job!

    Ashley,

Your ideas are fantastic. The one that I think you should go with is your third idea talking about the carryout system at your work. I believe that it will be easiest for you to collect data due to you working at the establishment, therefore you know the ins and outs of the business. Also it seems from your details that you already have a clear vision of what the solution should be and how you should approach it. Your engineering class is also wonderful, but it will be more difficult for you to collect data on that topic as the people that you would need to talk to will be harder to find.

Ashley, I think all three of your ideas are great and have practical solutions that you could help find. I really liked the thought of your first idea because the fact of the matter is that some students need to work and classes can often get in the way. I had a few friends who also had issues with the timing of their classes because it would cut really close into their work time. Finding a way to open up more options of when students can schedule their engineering classes would be a big help for students in this situation. My question for this idea would be, what would your data look like? Or would you perhaps conduct some interviews with working engineering students.

For your second idea I think its solid but I just think you might stray in to the line of dealing with parking issues which we were told to avoid. But besides that it sounds good. You can collect data on just how many lights are in these darker areas and what would be a good cost eeffective way of getting proper lighting there.

Your last idea seems the relevant to you as it is directly involved with your ability for you to do your job. There seems to be many solutions that you could come up with. I would suggest you go on with this idea. Also, you wouldn’t have to go too much out of the way to find people relevant to the issue to talk to and see what they think would improve the system.
